When I was young my dad taught me how to tell the cardinal directions by just looking at the sun. This stuck with me and the predictability of the sun and its movements has been something that I, often unintentionally, have used as a reference point to orientate myself throughout my life. That predictability changed when I moved from the northern to the southern hemisphere. Something so simple as telling north from south, east from west, has now become a major quest, almost always resulting in checking the compass on my phone and still feeling confused.
Being born on opposite sides of the globe, my wife and I have been taken turns negotiating which hemisphere to live together in. On one side it’s a hot summer day meanwhile a cold winter night on the other. My awareness of the contrast between the two places is heightened, and even though it is difficult to physically go between the two places, mentally I often find myself jumping between the two.
Taking Turns (2026) is a collection of photographs by Victor Staaf from Stockholm, Sweden and Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland Aotearoa New Zealand. With images of family and friends from our immediate surroundings from each place, Taking Turns comes together as small publication with two beginnings. Each location has its own section, joining in the middle, from two different orientations, simulating the globes' hemispherical division.
